What are termites?
Termites are destructive unwanted pests that no homeowner wants to learn is feeding on their home’s structural wood. One of the most widespread species living across the country is the subterranean termite. Subterranean termites have high moisture needs, so they nest under the ground in damp soil and prefer to feed on decaying or water-damaged wood. As their name tells us, these termites nest below the ground, moving from the nest to their food source every day. These tiny insects are social, and all members work together to ensure the colony’s success.
Are termites dangerous?
While a termite’s appearance may not give off the vibe of danger, the five billion dollars in damages they cause across the country each year certainly does! While termites don’t attack people or our food sources, they do attack and damage our homes, causing costly structural damage that is not covered by most homeowners’ insurance. While one termite can’t cause much damage, a colony with tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of termites certainly can!
Why do I have a termite problem?
The southern United States is a hotbed for termite activity, meaning that when living in Pooler or Savannah, Georgia, having in place a termite control program is a must! The heat and humidity found in our area allow these pests to flourish and maintain large populations.
Worker termites leave the colony each day to forage for food to bring back to the colony. Since termites travel through the soil, it is easy for these pests to find a way into our home accidentally. Termites usually enter into our structures through cracks in the foundation or wood that is making direct contact with the ground. Once inside, if food is available for them to consume, they will keep returning day after day, month after month, and year after year!

Where Will I Find Termites?
Termites are often referred to as “silent invaders” because of their ability to move in and out of our homes undetected and work for long periods without being seen. Termites can remain “invisible” because they travel through the soil or mud tubes and, once inside, feed on the interior of wood located behind the walls of our homes, under floors, and above ceilings.
Termites usually attack water-damaged wood or wood that is near sources of moisture. Structural wood near windows and doors, sinks, tubs, and water pipes are especially susceptible to termite damage.
